The Best Beginner Ski Destinations

in Europe

January 11, 2020

We've all been there before. Face planted in a sea of white, our legs flailing in awkward angles and our upper body strength no where to be found as we try (unsuccessfully) to lift ourselves off of the ground. That is how the first the first run down a ski slope is for many of us and actually its part of the fun of learning (and in areas where it snows quite heavily, feels like you're falling into a bed of feathers!). However there are some resorts and destinations which are better suited to beginners new to the sport, than others and in this article, we're gonna run through the top picks:

Alice Ogeh

A Lawyer in her previous life, the copious hours of scrutinising law text books, case law and wikipedia have resulted in the birth of a creature, whose capability to research into the paths less trodden, surpasses most seasoned travellers.

1. Tignes, France

Noted at the top of most beginners ski lists is this group of villages in the French Alps which offers a high altitude resort with a very healthy number of blue slopes and beginner areas. As part of it's beginners offerings, the resort even has in place 3 different zones for self-learning or professional learning, which has carpets, chairlifts and draglifts which can be used for free. A day ski pass once you're ready to ski on the slopes is €51 for an adult. The closest airports to a Tignes ski resort is Chambéry and Grenoble are closest but are not served by many airlines. Geneva is the main gateway airport and has the most choice of flights and transfer services.

2. Zermatt, Switzerland

Switzerland's highest ski resort, this area is best for all abilities without compromising on views, with the best slopes for beginners being stationed right up on the mountain. The cost of a beginners ski day pass is 56 CHF and depending on age, at this very family friendly resort, kids can ski absolutely free.

3. La Roserie, France

Less well known and therefore less crowded than Tignes, lies the skiing resort of La Roserie. More of a classic ski resort vibe with plenty of those wooden type chalets dotted around and a number of doorstep-to-ski accommodation types, it’s a great and convenient choice for beginners who want to practice their runs on the gentle slopes. An adult one day ski pass costs €47 for an adult.

4. Champoluc, Italy

Set out within the Monterosa ski area, this resort is only a 90 minute drive from Turin Airport and with a Gondola right in the middle of the village centre taking you all the way up to the ski area with gentle nursery slopes, this resort is a win for beginners. With its own English speaking ski school and rental shop based in Monterosa, it's probably best for any first timers to organise their trip via Ski2.

5. Zell am See, Austria

Home to the Schmittenhöhe ski resort, a family friendly resort with quite a few slopes for beginners and accessible together with two other ski resorts in the area under one pass, this is an area where beginners can start from the bottom and build their confidence all the

way to intermediate level within a week. Day tickets for adult start from €46.
