Top 10 Travel Beauty Picks & Hacks

April 7, 2020

111

Who else thinks that there should be an extra hand-luggage allowance just for make up?? For years, women everywhere have shed tears over their Mac liquid foundation/Lancome Mascara/any other expensive make up item, they had only just bought two days ago, now being throw away by the unmoved security agent as the measly square plastic ziplock bag still struggles to lose, before their eyes. We've all been there, but thankfully, through a lot of trial of error, we think we've now come up with hacks so that no woman will ever have to shed a tear over her limited cosmetics allowance again!

1. Sheet Masks

Especially for long haul flights, these sheets which pass the 'no liquid carry on test' are a literally a life saver that prevent you from walking off the plane once you've reached your destination, looking like a dry and ashy corpse. The low humidity in airplanes can cause skin dryness, along with discomfort in sensitive areas like your eyes, mouth, and nose, so to restore the balance, we would strongly suggest opting for an affordable moisturising mask such as the widely popular Dr.Jart+ Dermask Water Jet Vital Hydra Solution Sheet Mask which is currently only £4.67 at Asos.

2. Refillable Perfume Bottles or Solid Perfumes

Part of looking and feeling good while travelling is also about smelling good. With all the tumble and fumbles of running for trains, buses, not missing your flight etc. you can easily work up a sweat and inadvertently work up a slight stink. Of course your trusty deodorant is there to help fight against odours, but the real feeling of luxury comes from carrying with you your favourite scent. Even if your favourite scent doesn't come in a travel sized bottle, it's easy to buy Refillable Travel Perfume Atomisers online and in-store. Currently Wowcher has some on offer from just £2.99

3. Blotting Sheets

Although your face tends to dry out during flights, once you get off your flight and enter a mildly hot or humid country, expect greasy oil filled pores galore. Immediately combat your T zone with a cheap and cheerful blotting sheet such as Japanese brand Jibs which contains highly absorbent charcoal.

4. BB Cream with SPF

Wondering what BB cream actually is? Well generally its been known to stand for blemish balm or beauty balm, but what it essentially is, is a foundation, moisturiser and sunscreen all in one! So essentially bring this little beauty product along with you and you're covering 3 bases in one and simultaneously cutting down on the amount of liquids that you need to bring with you.

5. Alternative Uses for Your Contact Lenses Case

This one is a type of simple hack that will save up some luggage and precious liquid space. Convert your old contact lenses case into a mini makeup storage/compartment container e.g. for your favourite eyeshadow and blush duo or your favourite highlight and bronzer duo. Its super easy (so long as you don't mind defacing some of your make up bits) to use a makeup spatula to scrap up some of your current make up and pot it into your lenses case.

6. Cleansing Wipes

Great for removing a layer of sweat, make up and generally the dirt, dust and particles floating in the air that tend to stick to your face as you hustle and bustle through major cities; cleansing wipes are a great travel companion. So far, no other cleansing wipes have beaten out my top fav, which are the simple cleansing wipes. They leave my face feeling clean, but are soft enough not to irritate or burn my sensitive skin!

7. Silk Headband/Headscarf

Speaking about dry faces, we can't forget about the health of our hair. Cotton pillowcases are known to absorb the oils from your hair and skin, which can leave them dry, brittle and prone to breakage and most hotels and hostels, aren't providing luxury silk pillowcases for you to rest your head on. If you tend to have curly or more kinky hair like me, then you will definitely want to invest in a silk pillowcase or headband to protect your hair and avoid frizziness. A silk headband can also double up as an easy way to create a bomb twistout or curled effect on your hair without the need for a curling iron!

8. Hanging Toiletry Bag

If you're travelling as a couple or group or solo and staying at hostels you will notice the distinct lack of bathroom counter space to place your toiletries. Instead of fighting to make a beeline to the bathroom to mark your territory upon first arrival, why not purchase a hanging toiletry bag so that you don't even need to worry about where you will be placing all your make up essentials.

9. Teeth Whitening Strips

Were you even really there, if you didn't catch a photo with a pearly white grin to prove it? It's great creating memories while in a new destination, but not so great once you look back in the film and the only thing you can focus on is the slightly off-white colour of your teeth in every picture which you actually look happy in! That's where teeth whitening strips come. Certainly not recommended as an every day solution, but on occasion, when you want to look your best for a photo op, teeth whitening strips can help to make you feel that more confident in your smile.

10. Lipstick

A formidable weapon in any girl's make up arsenal, a bright and bold lipstick can literally transform an outfit. Whether you go for a deep red to help switch up an outfit from day to night or a vibrant purple for stand out Harajuku vibes, a bold lipstick can really be the missing accessory to a potential amazing outfit.

I hope the above helps - If you have used any of the products listed above or have any other suggestions to cut down on the amount of liquids we carry through airport security (help a sister out!) I would love if you could share your experiences below.
