Why Theatre Will Always Trump Netflix

During This Pandemic...

And the top theatre productions you should be looking out for during the lockdown!

June 3, 2020

As much as I like the originality of some Netflix films and shows (I mean you have to admit at least 25% of the time they miss the mark completely), it gets to a point where the plot lines and binge watching gets boring. Before the lockdown, one form of entertainment that I never got bored of and always seemed to transport me into a wonderfully fantastical story-telling world, is the world of theatre.

A Lawyer in her previous life, the copious hours of scrutinising law text books, case law and wikipedia have resulted in the birth of a creature, whose capability to research into the paths less trodden, surpasses most seasoned travellers.

With loads of theatres closed, you may think it's impossible to relive this experience now, but the well deserved hype and quality of online rebroadcasts of the Barber shop Chronicles and Hairspray prove that's not the case at all. While you may have missed out on the limited online broadcast of these truly amazing shows, with the lockdown still pretty much in place, there are plenty of others to look forward to and catch before its too late.

1. Beauty & The Beast

I am a 90's baby and pretty much lived off disney VHS tapes for much of my primary years, so I'm no stranger to beauty and the beast and the following theatre productions most definitely do justice to classic love story of looking beyond exterior to the heart of a person:

Chichester Festival Youth Theatre Production - Click Here to Watch

Version found on Youtube - Click Here to Watch

2. Macbeth

Fancy a bit of tongue-twisting soliloquies or simple need to catch up studying for an upcoming social distancing drama or english literature class? Well you're in luck as you can now find shakespeare direct and live on your screen via the Shakespeare's Globe Youtube website and best of all, it's free. You can currently watch Macbeth on their youtube channel or by simply clicking the play button below:

3. Les Misérables

If you fancy a bit of a musical over drama, then you'll be pleased to know that one of the most popular and awarded musicals on earth is available for you to watch from the comfort of your home. Pop open a tub of hagen-daz and enjoy this decent broadcast of Les Miserables that we found on youtube.

Alternatively, if you're really just interested in the music and less about the acting and stage production, check out this high quality concert production which was completely sold out during its 12 week run. Note however, that the production is not free, however for the small price of £4.99 for a show that was completely sold out, it may be well worth the experience! click through to here to rent or purchase the broadcast.

4. The Little Mermaid

Another Disney classic! If you can't wait for the Disney live action remake to come out, feast your eyes on this good quality filmed production and in no time you'll feel like you're under the sea (under the sea), rather than watching from the comfort of your living room!

5. The National Theatre Youtube Channel

As I said above, while you may have been unfortunate to miss out on the likes of the Barber Shop Chronicles and Hairspray online, this shouldn't stop you from keeping an eye out for new productions which are released every Thursday on the National Theatre Youtube Channel. There have been a wide array of diverse productions featured in the past including the Barbershop Chronicles and Cleopatra and I would highly recommending subscribing to their channel and flicking through some of the trailers which normally gives an indication of what production may be dropping next! You can subscribe to their channel here

Have you had a chance to watch any of these productions online or before the lockdown? Let us know below 🙂
